In 1703 Tsar Peter the Great used his own technical drawings and designs to build the first ship for the new Russian Navy. On 24th March the keel of frigate ‘Shtandart’ was laid in St. Petersburg and 5 months later the construction of the ship was completed. The Tsar himself was the first Captain of his flagship that served in the Russian Navy for 16 years.

On 4th November 1994, almost 300 years later, another keel was laid in St Petersburg to construct an exact copy of the ship Peter the Great liked so much. According to the tradition of the 18th century, also the 'new' Shtandart is richly decorated with beautiful carvings. After 5 years of hard work with a team of about 40 people, led by the current Captain of the ship Vladimir Martus, the replica was launched in 1999 in the presence of 40,000 spectators. The maiden-voyage of Frigate ‘Shtandart’, exactly 10 years ago, was to Zaandam where Peter the Great worked as ships carpenter. The voyage continued to Amsterdam to participate in Sail2000, the first major event for ‘Shtandart’,

Nowadays Frigate ‘Shtandart’ operates as Sail Training Ship for the non-profit (charitable) organization Projekt Shtandart in St. Petersburg. The mission of this organization is to give young people the opportunity to develop leadership skills through sail training and maritime education, to learn about new cultures, make new friends and act as young ambassadors of Russia. Just like Peter the Great had in mind 3 centuries ago. Every year the ship takes part in Tall Ships Races and is a welcome guest at major events.
