Pogoria was built in 1980 as a prototype for a series of ships in Gdansk, Poland. The barks "Iskra II" (1982) from Poland, the "Kaliakra" (1984) from Bulgaria and the "Oceania" (1985) all belong to this series.
Between 1980 and 1981, she was used by the Polish Academy of Sciences for a visit to King George Island in the South Shetlands, Antarctica. After this, the Pogoria was deployed on projects in Africa. The Iron Shackle Fraternity currently owns the barkentine, which is now used as a sail training ship.
The Pogoria has taken part in, among other events, the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race in 1980, Sail America in 1986, Sail Rostock in 1991 and 1993, Sail Amsterdam in 1995 and the Cutty Sark Races 1996-2003. The barkentine won the Cutty Sark Trophy in 1999.
