The Kaliakra is named after a Bulgarian national heroine who took her own life to avoid falling into the hands of the Turks. This woman’s figure currently adorns the bow of the Kaliakra. Ship owner of The Kaliakra is the Bulgarian Maritime Training Centre. The ship maintains a crew of 11 permanent sailors, with additional room for 38 trainees. The trainees are put to work in four areas: three on deck and one in the galley. Every five days they switch places.
In 1998 and 2001, the Kaliakra participated in the Cutty Sark Tall Ship race. During the 2001 race, the crew won the “Peter and Simon Krouter memorial trophy” for the crew which has demonstrated the best ability to work together.
