The keel of the Dewaruci was built by C. Stülcken & Sohn in Hamburg in 1952. The barkentine was ordered by the Indonesian Navy to serve as a training ship. The ship’s full name is the KRI Dewaruci. KRI stands for "Kapalperang Republik Indonesia", meaning "Naval vessel of the Republic of Indonesia". Dewaruci is an Indonesian name describing a legend of the god of the sea. This god represents bravery and courage. A figurehead of the god graces the bow of the Dewaruci.
