The Dar Mlodziezy was designed by the well-known shipbuilder Zygmunt Choren. After the Dar Mlodziezy, he also designed comparable square-riggers such as Mir (1987), Druzhba (1987), Pallada (1988), Khersones (1988) and Nadezhda (1989). The construction of the Dar Mlodziezy was paid for in large part by money collected from young Poles. The ship was launched in 1982 and had the opportunity to participate in the STA race from England to Portugal and back.
Today, the ship is manned by a crew of 150 cadets involved in one-year naval training programme in Gdynia. In order to cover the costs, paid training programmes are also conducted on board the ship.
Among other events, the Dar Mlodziezy has taken part in SAIL Amsterdam (1985), the Grand Regatta Columbus (1992), SAIL Bremerhaven (1995, 2000), the Tall Ship Race (1995, 1996) and the Transatlantic race (2000).
