Sailing Heritage

Holland's Glory

Varend Erfgoed

In addition to the immense Tall Ships, hundreds of classic sailing ships and motor-powered ships will also be participating in SAIL Amsterdam 2010. The traditional Dutch fleet--dubbed the Sailing Heritage--consists of classic ships (with sails or motors) that sailed our inner and coastal waters in many cases up until the mid-20th century. With the rise of the modern motor-powered ships, these boats were often altered at the time or were in danger of ending up as wrecks on a deserted bank. Fortunately, an enthusiastic group of people rediscovered these ships and today keep them "ship-shape" with love, energy and craftsmanship.

To help in this regard, many ship types have established a preservation organisation which, among other things, devotes itself to the preservation and maintenance of these ships. These organisations also help boat owners research the history of their vessels.

During the week leading up to SAIL Amsterdam 2010, a great deal of the Sailing Heritage will collectively steam up three different routes from the north, west and south to the gathering harbours. From there, they will participate in the SAIL IN Parade on Thursday 19 August 2010.

The preservation organisations of the Sailing Heritage are brought together under the overarching Federation of Old Dutch Vessels (Federatie Oud-Nederlandse Vaartuigen - FONV).
