        SAIL 2010: Succesful and clean
</title>
      <link>http://english.sail2010.nl/nieuws/sail-2010-succesful-and-clean</link>
      <description>
        Amsterdam, 23&amp;nbsp; August 2010 &amp;#8211; SAIL 2010 went off
without a hitch. Yesterday, Dansi Nautica! closed the cultural
programme with a festive performance on the main stage. The last
tall ships left the IJ harbour Monday morning to set out for sea
once again. Dismantling work along the quays has already
begun.

SAIL widely embraced

&amp;#8220;We really got the feeling that all of the Netherlands embraced
SAIL, that&amp;#8217;s how positive the public response was,&amp;#8221; says Nico Buis,
chairman of the SAIL Amsterdam Foundation. &amp;#8220;But the visitors
weren&amp;#8217;t the only ones who were enthusiastic about SAIL &amp;#8211; the
international crews also said that they had a wonderful time in
Amsterdam. We also organised various activities especially for
them, including a sports programme, the Crew Parade with the crew
party at the Nieuwmarkt and a breakfast with the residents in the
events area.&amp;#8221;

Even with all the traffic on the water and along the shore, SAIL
transpired without any notable incidents or accidents. Director
Daan Meijer:&amp;nbsp; &amp;#8220;We were well-prepared on all fronts to steer
the event in the right direction, so it is extremely satisfying
when everything goes according to plan.&amp;#8221;

Cleanest public event in the Netherlands

During the event, the SAIL Amsterdam Foundation put an enormous
focus on sustainability and socially responsible event management.
This did not escape the notice of the visitors and residents, in
light of the many spontaneous reactions received by the
organisation about how clean it was everywhere. Ronald Heinen from
ECO-Eyes was responsible for the environmental management leading
up to and during SAIL. Heinen had over 1,000 rubbish bins placed
around the SAIL area for separated waste collection. This resulted
in more than 150m3 of clean plastic waste. All rubbish points were
easy to spot and featured nicely designed logos. In addition to
this, over 120 staff members in recognisable green T-shirts worked
during the day and in the evening cleaning tables, picking rubbish
off the ground and emptying the containers at the recycling
stations. The recycling staff members received a lot of compliments
for their work. This approach proved to create a positive dynamic
between the organisation and the public: many visitors took the
trouble to separate their rubbish and throw it in the right
container. Heinen hopes&amp;nbsp; the positive experiences at SAIL 2010
will serve as an example for other large public events.

Royal naval review

On Sunday, HRH Prince Willem-Alexander, patron of the SAIL
Amsterdam Foundation, held the naval review before a large
audience. A hundred ships of the Dutch sailing heritage fleet, in
twenty squadrons, paraded past De Groene Draeck (&amp;#8216;The Green
Dragon&amp;#8217;), the royal family&amp;#8217;s private yacht. Then, with the Prince
of Orange, Queen Beatrix and Princess Maxima on board, the yacht
made a circuit of the IJ harbour. The crowd responded to this with
great enthusiasm.

Highlights

There were many highlights during SAIL 2010. The impressive SAIL-IN
Parade on Thursday 19 August was witnessed by thousands of
spectators on the shore and on the water. In the days that
followed, the public had the opportunity to enjoy the tall ships
moored along the quays and the broad cultural programme. The ING
Pirate Island and the Province of Noord-Holland Children&amp;#8217;s Stage
were a real hit with the kids. Meanwhile, the younger crowd enjoyed
the 5HarboursCityTour and the many shows that took place there in
Amsterdam-Noord. The heart of SAIL was the main stage at the head
of Java Island, where thousands attended the concerts and
performances put on by a wide range of bands and artists. The
performances on the decks of the tall ships were equally popular.

SAIL 2010

SAIL Amsterdam 2010 took place from Thursday 19 August to Monday 23
August 2010 on and around the IJ river.&amp;nbsp; The event was made
possible in part by main sponsors the Municipality of Amsterdam,
the Royal Netherlands Navy, ING, the Dutch Postcode Lottery
(Nationale Postcode Loterij), De Telegraaf newspaper and Gaastra
and sponsors Accor Hotels, the Province of Noord-Holland, Nuon and
Clifford Chance. SAIL has entered into a partnership with the Royal
Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution (KNRM).

SAIL 2010: Grand nautical and cultural spectacle on and around the IJ river

        Nautical highlights
SAIL&amp;#8217;s main attraction consists of the impressive tall ships and
the large fleet accompanying them. The SAIL-IN Parade will set off
on 19 August around 10:00 a.m. from IJmuiden and is expected to
begin arriving at 12:00 p.m. in the IJ harbour in Amsterdam. The
tall ships will be escorted by thousands of boats during their
crossing of the North Sea Canal, providing images which will once
again go all over the world. Tall ships from dozens of countries
have confirmed their participation in SAIL Amsterdam 2010. Striking
newcomers include the Götheborg from Sweden and the Dhow Theyab
from the United Arab Emirates. The Stad Amsterdam, which retraced
the route of Darwin&amp;#8217;s voyage on the HMS Beagle, will also lie
moored along the quay during SAIL.
From historical to modern
In addition to the renowned tall ships, a unique collection of
about 500 ships from the Dutch sailing heritage fleet, naval ships,
various replicas and modern ships will be moored in and around the
IJ river. Other nautical highlights will include the Ceremonial
Salute, the Naval Review, the safety and rescue demonstrations by
the Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution (KNRM) and the Royal
Netherlands Navy, the so-called &amp;#8216;Pieremachocheltocht&amp;#8217; involving
rowboats decked out in carnival fashion, the Crew Parade through
the city centre, the Aquacorso, the salute to the tall ships from
approximately 1,300 canoers and rowers and the races in the
SAILSation area.
New: SAILSation
New to SAIL is SAILSation, the racing area on the north side of
the KNSM island where various types of boats will participate.
Unique races between &amp;#8216;skutsjes&amp;#8217;, Frisian sailing boats, will take
place on Friday and during the weekend on the IJ river. This will
be the first time that these ships can be seen in racing form on
the IJ and pictures of it will no doubt be spectacular. The stands
for spectators will offer a good view of all races.
New: Entertainment on tall ships and SAIL Sing-Along
For the first time at SAIL, there will be entertainment on the
decks of the tall ships. Ensembles, storytellers and performances
will enrich the nautical atmosphere. The daily SAIL Sing-Along on
the main stage at the head of Java island also promises to be
highly enjoyable. This event features various shanty choirs,
supported by an orchestra, singing well-known songs of the sea. The
public is naturally expected to sing along at the top of their
lungs.
Focal point: The ING Pirate Island
This edition of SAIL is focusing extra attention on children
aged 6 to 12 and young people aged 15 to 25. For children, the
Bogortuin garden at the beginning of Java island is not to be
missed. At the Province of Noord-Holland Children&amp;#8217;s Stage, the
programme features the dazzling shows of Kapitein Winokio in which
the children themselves can play a role. The band Zirkus Zirkus
will lay down dope beats and hip dance moves. On the water, main
sponsor ING will create the ING Pirate Island, the focal point of
SAIL 2010. During the day it will be a veritable adventure paradise
for children, while in the evenings it will serve as a fantastic
and breathtaking backdrop for a good &amp;#8216;pirate party&amp;#8217;. In the nearby
Aquarena, children can even learn how to sail, water-ski and build
rafts. And this is just a taste of the activities that are set to
take place here.
Hot spot for young people in Amsterdam-Noord
From the starting point in Amsterdam, to a stop-over in
Casablanca, to Sydney by means of Tokyo, and on to the final
destination of New York! During SAIL, young people can go on a
world tour through these five inspiring harbour cities. At the
Gedempte Insteekhaven in Amsterdam-Noord, the HarboursCityTour has
a swinging programme in store especially intended for young people.
Here, both during the day and in the evening, you will be able to
experience the atmosphere of various cultures. Music, dance, sports
and art will transform Amsterdam-Noord during SAIL into the hotspot
for young people from 12 to 25 years of age.
Head of Java island: Heart of SAIL
The musical heart of SAIL will be the large main stage at the
head of Java island. Lunch concerts will take place on this stage
from 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. The famous Navy Band (Marinierskapel)
of the Netherlands Royal Navy, which is comprised of 54
professional musicians, is one of the acts which will play a big
role on the main stage. This group is known as one of the most
professional brass bands in the world. In the afternoon, the &amp;#8216;SAIL
Jazz Swing&amp;#8217; will delight the crowd with their swinging
performances. The SAIL Sing-Along is the ideal musical backdrop for
cocktail hour and performances from various artists and dance
groups are planned on all evenings.
Special Voyages
In cooperation with the SAIL Amsterdam Foundation, the Amsterdam
district of the Dutch Red Cross is organising the so-called
&amp;#8216;Special Voyages&amp;#8217; during SAIL 2010. These voyages are specifically
intended for people who live in social isolation, including the
chronically ill, handicapped, elderly and individuals who live
under the poverty line. During SAIL 2010, they will be offered a
complete sailing package. The Special Voyages have been made
possible thanks to financial contributions from dozens of
businesses and organisations. In total, over 4,500 people will be
able to enjoy SAIL 2010 through this initiative. The registration
deadline has now passed. The selection procedure and organisation
of the Special Voyages is being conducted by the Amsterdam Red
Cross and Zeil Noord Foundation and is made possible in part by the
Amsterdam-Noord urban district.
SAIL live on television
SAIL 2010 will be covered extensively on the NOS television
station on Thursday 19 August. The NOS will provide complete
coverage, including live reports and recorded pieces, of the
SAIL-IN Parade and the day's other activities. The station RTV
Noord-Holland will also broadcast daily SAIL news. Other Dutch
television and radio programmes will also devote special attention
to SAIL 2010.
